I am reposting this image in recognition of World Turtle Day, which began in 2000 as a way to raise awareness about the need to protect the habitats of turtles and tortoises. Sadly, it is estimated that more than half of the world’s sea turtles have ingested plastic, and recent research has shown that sea turtles are drawn to plastic not only because of its appearance; after its been in the ocean gathering algae, plants, and small animals, it smells like food to them.During the #handsacrossthesand event this morning, people gathered on beaches around the world to form “a symbolic line in the sand against offshore oil drilling.”—Scientific name: Bombus PlasticusOne million plastic bottles are opened every minute around the world, and it is estimated that “In California, five billion plastic caps end up polluting the environment annually.” As anyone who cleans beaches knows, caps are one of the most commonly found items during shoreline cleanups.—𝘼𝘾𝙏𝙄𝙊𝙉 𝘼𝙇𝙀𝙍𝙏—ᗰᗩY TᕼE ᖴOᑌᖇTᕼ ᗷE ᗯITᕼ YOᑌ!—Mayday Flower༻࿌ 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗯𝗹𝗼𝘄!
